Valve adjustment problem

I adjusted my valves this morning on my '00 Civic to the proper gaps but I am still getting a knocking sound.

Also, the bigger problem, i broke one of the screws holding the cylinder head cover. Aparently, i put too much pressure on it. Am I totally screwed or is there a way to get the broken off part of the screw out?

Number 2 in the picture is what I broke.



Any help would be great.

Fortunetely for you, you are not totally screwed lol(that is if it's only the top part of the stud that you broke)..if you look down on the stud, you will see that u can un-screw by the bottom of the stud(since it is just screwed to the head and not welded)!!

Are you sure you used the right feeler gage?
Most specs listed are in milimeters.
I made the same mistake the very first time I adjusted
my valves. I set to thousandths when the spec in the book
was in milimeters. Once I readjusted they were fine.

The stud is broken off flush with the cylinder head. Now what?

Ill look into ensuring the feeler gauges are correct.

You'll have to try and drill it out.
Maybe an "Easy-Out" will work, they're made to
get a stud out. (If you can find one that small.
Sometimes you can drill smaller and chase with a tap and save
the threads, if not then drill and tap the next larger size.
Otherwise, take the head off and to a machine shop.
Some may do it on the car, call around and see.

got a hold of a highly recommended shop today and they are going to remove it for me. Better safe than sorry.

Also, I didnt have the correct feeler gauges. I bought some metric and the valves sound like they should. THanks.

i just broke my bolt off this weekend into the cylinder head for my vavle cover too. lol. it was actually pretty simple to get out. i drilled a little whole into the top of the broken thread about 1/8 deep and used an easy out. took about ten minutes.

I paid to have my valves adjusted about 60k ago and they need it again due to knocking. When I buy the gaps, where exactly do I place them. The above diagram is great in looking for the order. But I'm uncertain on how to actually adjust the valves. Rather do it myself vs pay a $230 again!

Between the rocker arm adjusing screw and the end of the valve stem.
The cam has to be in the right position, it's different for each set of
valves. Get yourself a manual, like a Haynes, from a parts store.
(AutoZone has them,about 20 bucks)
It'll show you everything you need to know.
