cruise control / check engine light

I bought a 96 VR6 a few day ago and the cruise does not work. I read about a hidden 5 amp fuse on automatics in one of the threads. Where is this hidden fuse located? I also had the check engine light come on today. Can this be reset by disconnecting the neg. battery cable? I also understand that VW's require a special code reader. Is there a preference if I purchase one?

The hidden fuse is on top of the fuse panel. You cannot see it from the small fuse access panel. You must remove entire panel which will expose steering column and entire fuse panel. Next... you will see two grey (maybe white) swinging clips on each end of the fuse panel. (It is holding panel like a swing). Once you detach these you will be able to lower panel thus exposing hidden 5amp fuse on "now" top right of fuse panel.

As far as the engine light. Does it stay on constantly? My light is occasionally and that is when I'm in heavy highway traffic. I think a sensor is triggered from exhaust fumes from the cars ahead of me. I hope

Hope I've laid out a good road map for you! Good luck!!
