EGR valve on 96 Sunfire

I have a code P1406 on my 96 Sunfire w/ 2.4L engine. P1406 = EGR temp sensor range/ performance. EGR valve pintle position circuit. Does this normaly mean the EGR valve needs to be replaced or is there another less costly fix. Thanks in advance, Guy

Re: EGR valve on 96 Sunfire

Clean the valve with throttle body cleaner. They get carboned up and that can cause issues. If that doesn't help then it will need replaced. Try car-part.com for a used one.

Re: EGR valve on 96 Sunfire

do that EGR valve effect performance or anything at all? I got that problem on my 99 dodge neon. I finally end up replacing because i can't that check engine light. but, i don't think it affect on driving..

ps: that replacement costed me $250+ about half for the EGR valve and the rest for labor..

The EGR valve can effect performance. I know from my old Ford that not having a functioning EGR valve made the car a little more powerful at the low end, but the pinging (pre-ignition) at high speed sapped so much power that the car couldn't maintain speed up a steep hill. Should be the same deal for your car, although the computer controls will probably hide the effects from you. Most importantly, the pre-ignition can and will eventually destroy your engine.
