Unhappy Hungry '89 Corolla

Searching for some ideas here folks that might match mine because I'm at a loss.

89 Corolla DX (4-AF) has now eaten it's second ignition coil this winter. And I can't come up with a valid pin point just yet.

We got the car in October, and given it's gas mileage, i thought I'd use it for the work commute. A short month later, the coil gave out (6 months old about) with 4 blocks left in a 13 mile city trip. So then the motor was hot, which was thought to maybe factor in some way.

Last night, I didn't get but 1 mile on my way home, temp just started to read, and it croaked. Coil again. In frustration to get as much detail as possible, I noted the distributer was damn hot, hotter than the valve cover and most of the head for that matter.

I have yet to look at his one as I got home at 9 o clock last night, but the last coil had no visible damage to it. The fuse for the ign. is the proper amperage, so that's not it.

I'm currently at a loss with this.

Re: Hungry '89 Corolla

Update:

Still searching for some input.

This coil shows now damage either, no burnt wires or the like in the distributer.

Plugs are not cracked. plug wires are good.

Other area of note: Around town, the car idle(d) great and drove smoothly, however on the highway, I'm told it had zero power when 'punched'.

Any ideas out there????

Re: Hungry '89 Corolla

update:

Back up and running, finally got a few free moments to go down to the junkyard and look for another distributer. Little gas down the carb, good to go.

Note-If you own a carbed 4A-F motor bag as many parts as you can, weither or not you need them. Of the hour and half I spent going through the import rows, and of a est 40 some Corollas, only one was not EFI
