Tranny oil cooler?

Hey guys, i just thought of and searched a transmission fluid cooler to see what there all about. I think its a great idea, has anyone ever seen one or have installed one on their vehicle? You can run the lines wherever u want, i thought it was a great idea.. Says it can double the life of a transmission because heat is the #1 tranny killer. It is like a mini rad for ur tranny. What do u think? They are really cheap also!

Re: Tranny oil cooler?

For the prices they are, I say do it for the hell of it. Very cheap and it can't hurt. I'll do it myself eventually.

Re: Tranny oil cooler?

I've never heard of anybody putting tranny oil coolers on small cars. Trucks that do a lot of towing especially going uphill will defintely need the cooler. Save your money for your retirement. We can't count on social sec. fo take care of us in the future.

Re: Tranny oil cooler?

Do you have AT or 5speed. For AT there is a built in tranny cooler w/c runs through the radiator. Just save your money for a rainy day. Just do a regular fluid/filter change and you'll be fine.

Re: Tranny oil cooler?

Well. for starters, I have a transmission cooler.
Back when i first got the car (its an automatic by the way) it would slip in second gear after it heated up. The previous owner had a hitch on the back and tended to do lots of towing. Since the cavalier tends to run quite hot, I couldnt figure out why they would have the lines running into the hot rad? Anyways. I decided to get a cooler and bypassed the rad completely. I stuck the cooler infront of it, right where theres an opening in the bumper, so it gets max airflow at all times. I must say, when I hooked it up it really let me drive farther without having any problems. After a while i eventually replaced the transmission with a new one, and ive kept the cooler where it is. Sofar it hasnt had any negative effects, and I must say im not too worried about it getting too hot now while driving rough. Best few bucks i've spent on the car.

Re: Tranny oil cooler?

For a small car to do a lot of towing would definitely shorten the tranny life. I have 151k miles on my 2.2 and have been lucky so far not to have any tranny problem. I just replace all the fluids at regular intervals and everything is fine. Good luck on your cooler.
