Warranty hell at the dealership

Can they get away with this?

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500 H.D purchased stock. Did a 3rd party 6” lift kit (Fabtech) and changed the tires to TOYO 35”x12x18s. Worked fine for a few weeks then the engine light came on: only had 4th gear. Took it to the dealer, who said the tranny was missing 2 O-rings and 2 solenoids were bent: said the problem will continue unless I put stock tires back on.

The truck has only 15,000 miles. The dealer would not warranty the diagnosis. The cost? $1,000.

They gave me a memo after refusing to cover it saying that all Duramax diesels with Allison transmissions have the same problem when the tires are not stock. Yet Chevy dealers have lots full of Silverado pick ups with lift kits and oversized tires. I feel scr%w%d!!! When has Chevy ever made a truck that you cannot change the tire size on?

What can I do to get the Chevy dealers to respect the warranty?

I am disabled and can’t do a whole lot of going out and researching this.
Any help would be great. Please email me at [email protected] with any suggestions. Thanks!

Well, in my not-so-expert opinion, it sounds like there was a transmission problem, which they pinned on an aftermarket lift kit, which does alter your driveshaft geometry, and could POSSIBLY be a contributing factor. You might need to bring a 3rd party ASE certified mechanic in and get his opinion.

Re: Warranty hell at the dealership

Any aftermarket fabrication will not void a warranty unless it can be identified as the cause.

Unfortunately in this case it looks like this is the cause. You're setup could have been improperly installed.

The lifted trucks at the dealer probably have the "issues" taken care of so that there isn't a problem.

Things like this are part of the risks of modifying trucks one way or another. Mine was lowered and never had any issues....some don't have as good of luck.

Re: Warranty hell at the dealership

The manufacturer warranties their product for FACTORY defects only.
If the defect is caused by an aftermarket accessory (not installed by the dealer or approved by the manufacturer), then the manufacturer has no obligation to fix the concern under warranty.
When the lift kit was installed, it changed driveline angles, when the larger tires were installed, it changed the operating rpm range of the engine and trans shift points, putting a larger load on drivetrain components.

The vehicle was designed a specific way..when you start changing the design, parts and systems don't operate in the same manner and can cause failures....

Yup, not the dealer or GM's problem anymore. I wont mod anything untill its well off warranty.

Re: Warranty hell at the dealership

I would contact SEMA and see if you have any legal recourse. They can't refuse a warranty claim unless they can prove the modification caused the problem. Unfortunately, in this case, you're probably hosed.
