control arms / ball joints

Hey all. My first post here. I've been searching and reading for weeks though. I recently picked up a 99 tahoe LT 4dr 4wd. It's a nice ride, but high mileage. 165k. Motor and tranny are solid, and all in all it's a good truck. I've traced a squeking popping front end to lower ball joints. I've been searching for info and found a good deal. I'm pretty sure I can handle the install myself, and then take it in for an alignment.

My question is regarding the 2 different types of ball joints available for this model. I need to determine if I need the 47.89mm or 45.79mm ball joints. The control arms look stamped to me, but I need to be sure. If I get the bolt on type, does it not matter ?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Any other tips for a new Tahoe owner are welcome also!

J.

Re: control arms / ball joints

Stamped control arm usually use the smaller ball joint and if its pressed in, you cannot use a bolt in on the lower. The uppers are usually bolt in

Re: control arms / ball joints

You need to look to see if the current lower ball joint is held in with Rivots or not. If so, you have the bolt in type. Otherwise, you should remove the old one and match it up at the parts store to be sure what you have.
