Eh...why not? Formula 350 winter beater vs. ....

First was vs. 97-99 Supercharged Grand Prix. From a stop light, he took off, so I played catch up, inching but didn't pass cuz there was a red light again...but after that light it's a good 3/4 mile of straight road...so before we stopped the light changed, we even up...I give it a punch and let off to let him know I want to go again, he gets it and punches it, I punch it right after he gets a nose on me, after a couple seconds I have a nose on him, and continue inching to about my mirror @ 110 mph (40 mph road, but 5 lanes and nothing but businesses). I shut down, rolled down the window to give the thumbs up, but he turned before i had the chance, and that was that.

Then...

Tonight, same road, same light...I pull up next to a brand new Toyota Tundra (not sure if it was the newest but looked like it in the dark). I almost always launch from that light just because there's no chance of hitting anything or getting in trouble for it. So as usual I punch it just for the feeling (i miss my VR4 ), and i notice in my mirror the Tundra isn't staying with the rest of the traffic behind me. So the next light is red and we both stop at it, and at this point I know he's going for it...but I always like to make sure. So the light changes, he peels out gettin a truck length on me, I take off controlled and reel him in and get a car on him within a couple seconds. Put a couple more cars on him and let off...but he's still going for it, so I say f*ck it and punch it up to about 115 (anymore and i don't feel safe w/ winter tires) and then let off...he was only about 3-4 lengths back so I gave him the thumbs up, too dark to see what he might have done, and i turned onto my street.

Not much but more action in the past week than I saw all summer in the VR4. Guess people aren't scared of the Firebird!!

No cliff notes, there hasn't been much racing going on so you can read it.

HA! AF tried to eat it, but copy and paste FTMFW!!

Nice races...at least someone can still have fun in the winter. I think its funny how your awd car is the summer car and the rwd car is the beater lol.

Yeah I figure i'd be extremely pissed off if I slid and put even a tiny scratch on the VR4, even if it could easily be buffed out! But I couldn't care less if I wrapped the Firebird around a tree, so --> Firebird winter car! I've always been scared to drive it in the winter b/c of all the horror stories i've heard of f-bodies in the snow, so I never did 'till this year, and I gotta say, it handles really well. Doesn't get stuck b/c of the posi, and I feel safe doin 55 on the highway in a blizzard...just gotta know how to handle it. No sandbags or nothin!

It's stock w/ 130k+ miles. I might have advanced the timing a little, but I don't remember what I left it at. I'm taking it to the track soon as spring hits, i've always wondered what it could do (owned it 6 years now).

Re: Eh...why not? Formula 350 winter beater vs. ....

From what I have read about your Formula 350 stock for stock it seems pretty close to the GTP. It wasnt very reliable but I read that your car weighs in at around 3400 lbs. I cant see it being that heavy but .

My car weighs in at 3400 as well if its true. When I was like 15 my next door neighbor got a white Formula 350. I remember how tough that thing looked. The guy washed it every weekend and I never saw him abuse it. I bet he still has it. I have always loved the 3rd gen Camaros and Firebird.

Get to the track and see what it has....

I think it's more like 3100 lbs but i'm not 100% sure. It does look tough though, specially when i have the summer tires on there (295/50's) I would love it if it was t-tops and didn't have rust/faded paint, but i'm not a restoring type of guy. It only needs about $1.5k of body work/paint into it to make it about perfect again, but not worth it to me. Right now its just the DD, reliable as all hell.

Re: Eh...why not? Formula 350 winter beater vs. ....

The LT1 F-bodys weigh about 3500lbs and a really good driver can break into high 13's. From what I have seen bone stock ones tend to hit about a 14.0-14.2 1/4. A decient LT1 F-body driver should not have a problem with a 97-02 GTP assuming it is in decient shape. Sounds like a fun race though.

This is true...cant hang with that top end power. no replacement for displacement. I think I would stand a much better chance with a L98...It had 240hp/335tq. I think.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
