84 cherokee rough idle, rough while driving

I have a 1984 cherokee and it idles rough and also jerks and jumps around rough while driving it. The check engine light is not on. Does anybody know what it could be. This is really killing me. Can someone please help me. PLEASE.

Man...this is the oldest...of the XJ series made....

Is it a 4 cylinder or a v-6..??

OK..on that model...stick to basics...I mean...plugs and wires....fuel filter, air filter...compression...

I agree. These trucks were pretty simple and straightforward.
As for the oldest....... I bought a new '84 XJ with a V6......... and I still have it.
Man, do I feel old now.........

I had the 84 also..with the 2.8L.

Rebuilt it once...leaks too much at the rear main. Bought the 97 with 4.0L to replace it ...actually drove the 84 in and drove out with the 97. The 84 was leaking a quart a week.

BTTT..start with the basics...plugs. What say you Carl?
