Opinions on 2 HDTVs

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on these two HDTVs-

Konka 37"

Olevia 37"

I really like the prices of these TVs but I've never owned a TV from either company. TIA

Re: Opinions on 2 HDTVs

I have a smaller Olevia LCD tv (26" I think) and could not be happier for $450 paid over a year ago. In this case, both look relatively the same to me with the same native resolution but with the exception that the Olevia has a higher contrast ratio as well as more inputs. For me, that would probably do it. I've not any experience with the other one but from the limited specs for the Konka, I would probably get the Olevia.

One thing though, the speakers on these TVs are relatively weak (for any LCD TV). I went ahead and got myself a cheap home theater system and used that with the TV instead of the speakers. Might be something to think about.

How about...don't buy from TigerDirect. They are usually more expensive and generally suck at customer service if you have a problem.

Here is pretty much the same, if not exactly the same TV on Newegg

Enjoy the savings

Re: Opinions on 2 HDTVs

I've already got myself a pretty good stereo and whatnot so I'm not worried about shitty speakers.

Thanks for the link...I'll have to see about shipping because I can just go into Tiger and pick up the TV. I've never had any customer service problems with them other than standing in line for what seemed like years. Have you had bad experiences with them?

Yes. I ordered a stick of memory from them once, and they threw a hissy fit when I tried to RMA it back to them because it wouldn't work in my laptop. I have also heard many a story from people I know/work with that have had all kinds of problems like shipping delays, getting screwed on rebates, etc. Just not a good company to deal with as far as I'm concerned. But if you live close to their warehouse/headquarters or whatever is close to you, then maybe you don't have to deal with the online problems.

I have bought many many things from Newegg, and every time they have treated me right. I will usually only buy computer parts from them now. They have earned my business for life in that respect.

Re: Opinions on 2 HDTVs

I would go with the olevia, has 1600-1 ratio and the konka has 1200-1. However the konka does have a 8ms response time.

What does the 1600-1 ratio and the 8ms mean? I'm pretty dumb when it comes to picking out TV's. For the most part I'll be playing Xbox 360 on it...and then watching some TV.

The 8ms is the refresh rate. It is how long the display takes to refresh the pixels. The lower that number, the better. I'm not exactly sure how to explain the contrast ratio to you, I just know bigger numbers are usually better.

Ok thanks, I get the refresh rate...I'll see if I can look up the contrast ratio.

Re: Opinions on 2 HDTVs

Lower response times eliminate the possibility of noticable 'ghosting'. What that means is that when you have fast movement in scenes of a program, you'll get residual images from one scene to the next as the response times can't keep up with the motion.

To the best of my understanding, it's not so much the TV getting that cold as not being operated from that temperature. The problem is making sure the TV is fully warmed to a "normal" room temperature before you try to turn it on.

The first HDTV I had was delivered in very cold temperatures, and it took several hours for it to reach room temperature, so it could be turned on. If it's not allowed to warm, the bulb could shatter, because it operates at high temperatures.

Re: Opinions on 2 HDTVs

That's interesting (and makes sense) with the low temperatures. I really didn't think about if LCD screens have lighting filaments or whatnot. What type of lighting filiaments are used to backlight the LCD displays?

I would assume that they used LEDs to backlight them.
