Get a can of seafoam, it was $5 for me yesterday and it made my car feel better than it has ever fealt before..
I used to use carb cleaner and just spray out the intake and never noticed a difference in feel after clearing it out of the engine. What you do is simple pour 1/3 a pint of the seafoam into a glass jar... then take a vaccume hose thats connected to any part of the upper intake plenum (I used the one that connects to my BOV) and with the engine on (must be warmed up for propper fogging I am told) you SLOWLY use the vaccume line to suck the 1/3 pint of seafoam into the intake.. Go slow and for heavens sake do not dunk the vaccume line under the surface much or you will stall the engine a second later and have to turn it over till it clears out enough to start again... Just barely touch the surface of the liquid with the hoze and it will suck a bunch in, do it in short bursts till its all gone from the jar.. Then re connect the vaccume hose you used and shut off the engine and leave it to work its magic in your heads cylinders and intake.. Go back after 5 minutes and start the engine.. it may not want to start but let it crank and get some freash air to burn.. once it starts up it can get EXTREEMLY smoky and may piss off neighbors, thats all the gunk in your engine coming out! Rev it up to 3-4k and keep doing that for a few minutes till it feels pretty good and perky (not bogged down by the seafoam so much anymore)... so thats when you take it out for a few loops around the block (again can be very smoky if you have a dirty upper portion of your engine like mine was), give it some load while your out there and dont be shy with it.. after a few miles or so and a few hard pulls it will start to not smoke under load or at all anymore and thats it! I noticed a MUCH better climb in PRM and my engine sounds a lot nicer, it also dosent make a horrid noise I have yet to figure out when starting up! Who knows if it makes more power but boy does it feel like it, much better response from my engine and a little less choppy idle. I never fealt as much of an increase in performance from any of my other mods alone even turning the boost up to 15.. and this one costs $5 and is very easy and should be done to any and every car at least once when it gets up there in miles. I plan on doing it to both my parents cars and mine again in a few weeks. I'd take a vid since it sounds so excellent but its snowing and raining out today. Check out vids on www.youtube.com of the smoking, its pretty cool in and of itslef.. can look like a good burnout! Just search for seafoam.

I have no idea why this stuff isnt way more popular than it is, considering what it does and for how easy and cheep.

Re: Spring cleaning with seafoam!! Like a new engine!
Yeah I think i'll have to do this when spring hits....I guess I could do it on both cars...maybe I should grab the camera for the Firebird...probably will be quite a smoke show.

Re: Spring cleaning with seafoam!! Like a new engine!
anyone ever have any bad experiences with seafoam?
I am no mechanic, nor have i ever used the stuff, but it seems to me that anything that can remove that much gunk/deposits that easily must be a fairly strong detergent and will also remove the thin oil layer protecting the cylinder walls (possible why the car runs rough and is hard to start immidiately afterwards?) not trying to be negative or discourage use. I'm really hoping someone tells me im wrong because i wanted to try the stuff myself, but this was something i am a little nervous about. |

Re: Spring cleaning with seafoam!! Like a new engine!
You are guessing the seafoam got hot and turned into metal? Dont most liquids when they get hot turn into gas? But i would say if it was spitting out "chunks" of metal somthing was bad in your cat

Re: Spring cleaning with seafoam!! Like a new engine!
no thats not what i ment.. i am saying that i think my cat was clogged and when the sea foam went through it just got more and more crap that clogged it up even more and eventualy the hot exhaust melted the cat and spit out chunks of it out the tail pipe.. i dont know exactly how it happend but we sea foamed it and then started it up after a few minuts and then gave it some gas it was smoking then red hot melted metal started shooting out of the tail pipe..

Re: Spring cleaning with seafoam!! Like a new engine!
IMO if your upper eingine is not being held togeather by gunk alone it is fine. Startup is a little harder I think beacuse its not used to runing with stuff inside it messing with the air fuel ratio etc, its suposed to fog inside the hot engine and burn off the gunk and I am guessing its the fog that makes the A/F ratio off till it clears out after it turns over a few times. Just cleaning out the throttle body or realy any part of the intake with carb cleaner will make it much harder to start probably because of the A/F again, it was much easier with the seafoam.
I dont have any cats so no worrys there lol.
