vinyl top

I have an 89 caprice with vinyl top and I was wondering if it is possible to take the vinyl off and paint it or should I just keep the vinyl. If I keep the vinyl top what color should i get.

Here is a pic of my car

please tell me what you think

Re: vinyl top

It's up to you to do what you want. I don't like vinyl roofs, because they offer an opportunity for water to get trapped and create cancer (rust) issues. Plus, they look bad when they start to deteriorate. Looking at it from an aerodynamic standpoint, they also induce what we call 'parasitic drag' which subtracts from fuel economy (although something to the order of one gallon for every 500 miles or so).

You can take the top off, sand it down and repaint it - but usually on the cars that get a vinyl roof, the roof-to-C-pillar joint is not completed and will need to be filled in with body filler and sanded (ala Bondo).

Re: vinyl top

I always liked the vinyl tops on these cars... I mean the full vinyl not the brougham half thing. It, to me, makes the look "nicer" for lack of better word. Like classier, and older in the good way. But I agree with the fact then when they do deteriorate either from lack of care, or simply age and weathering they do begin to take away from the look of the car. It also can create a problem with holding water, especially when it starts to deteriorate. When new, vinyl is pretty much waterproof, but as it ages it tends to become to be more absorbant, and once you get a crack, even a small one, water gets in and soaks into the cloth backing of the vinyl, holding the water there stagnant agains the metal roof, thus causing corrosion. But if properly installed, and maintaned a vinyl top can add great looks to a car by my opinion. Thats my

Re: vinyl top

on the old 80 caprice i had it had a neglected white vinyl top in not that great of shape so i used spray 9 and the presure washer to clean it,let it dry good and put it in the shop. the next day i took a white malimine paint with paint roller and brush and painted it. this looked as good as new and lasted for the five years that i had the car. ( note this top was not a padded roof)
