So I got tuned for 100 octane...

On Tuesday my Evo was tuned for 100 octane. It's not my daily driver anymore so I said why not. Man it's a whole new world. Better throttle response, better gas mileage, and an extra 50whp. It put down about 320whp on a Dyno Dynamics, which without a frame of reference doesn't sound like all that much, but another one of their customer's put down 295whp on the same dyno the week before and then rolled off an 11.92 @ 116mph at Atco in Sacramento the following weekend. It's a very conservative dyno so, needless to say, I'm happy with the new found power.

Yesterday afternoon my buddy and I were on Highway 5 just south of Tracy. There's nothing there - mostly just big rigs scattered every 1/4 mile or so on the way down to SoCal. It's 2 lanes each way with about 50 yards of grass field dividing the northbound and southband lanes. Basically it's a safe place to haul ass.

So I'm cruising at about 75mph and my (280lb) buddy keeps egging me on to run it out. Not wanting to dissapoint, I check both ways (and in the air) for smokie, and put the petal down. We got up to 140mph in no time before my buddy screamed uncle. I was impressed. 5th gear pulls like 4th gear used to. I felt like I could have done another 20mph or 30mph if I wanted to. In any event, my excessive display of speed apparently attracted the attention of two dudes in an SRT-8 Charger. I have absolutely no idea where or which direction they were going when they saw me. I thought the coast was clear. But anyways I was cruising at 75mph again when I saw a black car in my rear view approaching quickly. For a second I thought it was the highway patrol but the headlights were different. I moved to the right lane, they moved to the left lane, and then passed me doing maybe 110mph or 115mph. I saw the SRT-8 badge and it definately sounded like there was an aftermarket exhaust on there. My buddy looked over at me and said "I feel like we're in that Mad Max movie right now".

About 100 yards up the Charger started slowing down so I sped up and pulled up next to him. Inside were two dudes, all smiles, and they rolled down the passenger side window to talk. The driver said something nice and then something nasty about my car...I couldn't understand him with all the wind and exhaust noise but I'm guessing his passenger gave me the thumbs-up when the driver said the nice thing and he shook his head and laughed when the driver said the nasty thing. Anyways I yelled as loud as I could "let's race to 120mph from 60mph". They both gave me that "it's your funeral look" and said to honk down. There were no cars or trucks as far as the eye could see up head. I rolled up the window, slowed to 60mph, checked both ways (and up) again for smokie, then honked down.

He jumped just a little, but as soon as I heard his intake and exhaust I punched it (from 4th gear now). I figured with his 6.1 liters of displacement and my 2.0 the only way to win this race was from 60mph to 80mph. Well I was wrong. The first 20mph was a lock but by about 85mph I started pulling like a freight train. By 100mph he was maybe 3 or 4 cars back. By 120mph there was more of him in my rear view mirror then my side mirror. It was awesome. Usually there's no replacement for displacement but yesterday it was accomplished with 26lbs of boost and 100 octane gas.

BTW...I burned a 1/4 tank of fuel in about 3 minutes of WOT driving. At $6/gallon I'm gonna be poor soon. Thank God I saved my 91 octane map!

Nice win, did they say anything after the race, do the flyby, or just drive off?

Tell me about it, I wanted to race one for a while, even though it would be a clear loss. I saw one at a light, no antennas or anything. He looked at me and I looked at him, right when I was about to ask him if he wants to go for it he turns on his lights and sirens and pops a u turn. Talk about lucky...

I dropped down to 75mph again after the race and then exited about 2 miles down. They stayed back the whole time. A couple times I saw them doing stupid shit, like swerving the car from side to side like F1 cars trying to get their tires warm. They were just goofing around or something. I wanted to find out which exhaust and which intake they had on the car too.

Most California city roads are nightmarish as far as pot holes but this particular stretch of highway 5 was in pristine condition. In fact most of 5 is in pretty good shape. It connect northern and southern CA so bazillions of dollars of commerce goes through it on an annual basis.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: So I got tuned for 100 octane...

Good kill. I absolutely love the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8. After Matt brought them up, I started doing more research on them, and they seem like the best deal amongst the SRT-8 powered vehicles, and look uber sleeper.

Anyways, back on topic. It sounds like he was an idiot. I try not to say anything stupid to people like he did to you. There are just too many modded cars on there to not put your foot in your mouth.

I need to start tuning my car with speed density from HP Tuners. Thinking about the help that pumping up the octane on your car did, I just can't help but think that I would gain alot of power like my buddy did with the speed density tuning (over 20whp alone, let alone throttle response). Gotta avoid modding urges. I wanna buy a bike in the future

A good MAF tune will net the same power as a good SD tune.
Some tuners do one or the other better though.

I'm in NorCal in Livermore but I've never had any trouble finding races.

Every time I drive the car somebody wants to go.
