1999 Chevy S10 Pickup Rattling

  1. Year, make and model - (99 Chevy S10)
  2. Engine size (V.6)
  3. Manual or automatic transmission (Auto trans)
  4. Mileage (115240)
The truck runs great except between about 45mph-60mph. At that point there is a rattling that sounds like its coming from the dash, and below the floor (feels kinda like your in the run gear in a manual). But outside that mph range, it runs very smooth... Any Ideas?

Welcome to the forum!

Is the vehicle 2WD or 4WD? Is this an engine driveability issue or ride quality issue?

Thanks!
This is a 2WD vehicle.
And its a ride quality, the engine runs quite smooth.

Its just between approx 40-65 mph or so, the dash will vibrate, and you will be able to feel the vibration in your feet.

Re: 1999 Chevy S10 Pickup Rattling

Vibrations are sometimes difficult to locate, however, a general rule of thumb is that universal joints will vibrate around 35MPH and again around 70MPH, depending on if it's a front or rear joint. The vibration usually is only noticed within a range of a few MPH + or - of those speeds. As the joint wear increases, the range will also increase. Tires a different story, a broken belt in a tire can be noticed at a very slow speed, usually under 10MPH, and perceived as a "wobble" in the vehicle. Broken belts can cause a vibration at any speed. Tire balance typically starts around 45MPH, depending on how far out of balance the tire is, and can, not always, get worse as vehicle speed increases. If a tire is out of round, (slightly egg shaped) it can also cause a vibration. The tire can be balanced perfectly but vibrate when on the road. Example: Spin an egg on the counter, no problem, now try to roll it end over end. Your vibration between 40 & 65 sounds like tire(s) out of balance. Hope this helps.

Went and got it balanced and rotated to see if it made any changes, and very little.. So I'm going to attempt to borrow some tires from a friend of mine to see if its the tires or perhaps something else..

Re: 1999 Chevy S10 Pickup Rattling

For an update since the problem is still ongoing..

Stripped the tires, and checked for liquids (there was some but not awhole lot) since the balancing was going haywire. Put backtogether and rebalanced ect. Still have the vibration no changes.

We put an EVA2 device on it and came back with readings approx..

0MPH, .5RPM, 6/0/0HZ, .03G - So some engine vibration, which unsure of as of yet.

And throughout the other ranges 25MPH-75MPH had a consisten 14/16HZ range which is usual for tire issues. (which is why spent all that time on the tires previously mentioned with no luck)

So next step since the vibration actually seems worse not better, going to check the universal joint, soon as I go and find a good tuturial wish me luck;P
