4WD problem
I have a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L and today the 4WD would not disengage. I was on a snowy surface that had not been plowed so I shifted into FULL TIME 4WD. Once I hit dry pavement I shifted back into 2WD. However, just from the sound and the way the Jeep was driving I could tell I was still in 4WD even though I shifted out (I shifted back into 2WD and hit the gas pedal twice to make sure it went back into 2WD like the manual said). Another thing I noticed is that when I cut a corner hard (such as pulling into a driveway) ALL the tires began to jump and lock up and let go while trying to pull into the driveway. So I pulled back out into the street and put one foot on the brake and one on the gas and kept hitting the gas pedal about 3 or 4 times until finally it disengaged and the back tire began to burnout (this is what I was aiming to do so I would know I was out of 4WD). So I crawed under the car to check out the transfer case and the center differential. There are no leaks or any other unusual things that I saw. Also, the steering returned to normal too. Now I am very savy with cars but I know very little about 4WD because I never worked on any 4WD and being this is the first vehicle I've owned that has this feature. So hopefully one of you guys could fill me in. Thanks a lot!

Re: 4WD problem
start out simple, try checking the fluid level in your t-case (if it's low, fill it, obviously). Also, grease your slip yoke (the grease fitting is on the front driveshaft about 1/2 way between the t-case and the front diff. If that's out of grease, it'll make it a real pain to get your front axle to disengage. see if those help, and if not, check your 4wd switch, the linkage to the t-case shifter, etc.
good luck! |
