abs and trac off lights
O.K. my car is a 99 grand am 2.4 , 2 door 90,000 miles on it
lately its been driving me crazy in the last month I repaired the window sash, (that really expensive white plastic clip) had the coil pack replaced, and the rear oxeygen senor replaced, and now when i drive the car after about 5 min's the "ABS" light and the "trac off" light come on at the same time with a chime, I don't know why, and it dosn't seem to affect the driving of the vechicle. anybody got any suggestions, hopefully its nothing to worry about and its a part i can replace myself. Thanks very much for all your help. |

Re: abs and trac off lights
Jack the vehicle up and check the ABS sensor wires on each wheel. The light usually means that either a sensor is bad or the connection to it is having issues. I am not absolutely certain as to whether the hub assembly on the Grand Am is the same as the Grand Prix but if it is then you will need to find out which sensor is bad and then replace the entire assembly, hub, bearing and sensor. If the sensors are seperate just replace the bad sensor.
You can play hit or miss or you can have it scanned with an ABS capable scanner. This will tell you which wheel is having the issue. |

Re: abs and trac off lights
So will this be a problem if I drive around like this for a while?
How do I know which sensor is bad, if I don't have a scanner? How can I test them? Thanks again |

Re: abs and trac off lights
You can drive the car that way, you abs just may not work ... I would get it fixed asap .... easiest to get the car scanned ... I don't think you can check the sensors with common tools. (if someone can prove me wrong please do I'd like to know how to do it myself)

Re: abs and trac off lights
canuck-GA, as GTP Dad said get the car scanned by a scanner that can read ABS codes(autozones dont, some advance autos can(if those are in your area)). This will tell you which one is bad.
Another thing you can do as soon as you get ready to drive the car, push the ETC button and turn off teh traction control. This should keep the other lights from coming on and might give you more time to replace the bad wheel hub sensor. My GA GT has had a bad right side for a year, as long as its not roaring/humming from a bad bearing. That would need replaced ASAP
