Speedometer Accuracy

Did you know that your 2004 - 2007 Chevrolet Aveo might not have an accurate speedometer reading?

I have a 2007 Optra LT and found this out when I hooked up my GPS system and there was a difference of 3 to 9 KMH. I wouldn't have even known there was a problem and you might not either. Spoke to GM head office and my dealer and they feel it is no big deal but I feel it is a safety issue and the speedometer should be accurate.

It seems this issue has been around for a while and no complaints, as you might not even know about it. My dealer though I was nuts when I told them this a week after getting my new 2007 Optra LT.

Check you maybe surprised.

Here is something else I found on a search on the web

Auto Repair Information » 2004 Chevrolet Aveo LS Wagon
2004 CHEVROLET EPICA, OPTRA ALSO INCLUDED. ... Description: SPEEDOMETER ACCURACY 7 TO 9% HIGHER THAN ACTUAL.

GM bulletin reads

Subject: Speedometer Accuracy Higher Than Actual - Keywords IPC miles ,mileage odo odometer offset speedo #PIC3779B
(01/15/2007)

Models:
2004 - 2007 Chevrolet Aveo
2004 - 2006 Chevrolet Epica (Canada Only)
2004 - 2007 Chevrolet Optra (Canada Only)
2005 - 2006 Pontiac Wave

This PI was superseded to add the 2005-2006 Pontiac Wave. Please discard PIC3779A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Conditions/Concern:

The speedometer may indicate vehicle speeds higher then actual. For example, the speedometer may indicate 60 mph at an actual 55 mph.

Note: The odometer accuracy is NOT affected as this is a speedometer ONLY issue.

Note: This is characteristic of the current calibration.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This condition is NORMAL at this time; do NOT replace the IPC for this conditions it will NOT repair this speedometer offset condition.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

yeh i noticed it too. i have an auto x-ray which runs diagnostics tests on my car. i can even do it while driving. it tells me my actual engine rpm, speed, intake temps, etc... i noticed mine is off by 3-4 mph. it could be an issue. but not to much for me because i speed anyways, but the people should be made aware of this and it should be fixed.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

WHat year and model is it?

I think a lot more people would notice this if they had what you had or a GPS. I bet it is not a couple of cars that have this problems it is all listed between those years.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

well if anyone wants an auto x-ray look at spendin close to 400$ for the good one. but i agree that all the aveos should be checked, but then again it dont bother me all that much, just another one of those damn quirks about the aveo.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

What year is the Aveo you have?

GM told me to bring mine into the dealer and they are going to test it against another car and give GM Canada the results of there finds.

I guess me telling them and their bulleting in 2004 saying it could be out from 7 - 9% from actual is not good enough. Also found out their was a recall on my optra on January 22 2007 but they never applied this recall when my car was in the shop on Febuary 22 2007.

They are going to do the test on my car and say it is out 5 - 7 kmh and say that this is ok.

Don't by a car from GM people once you get the car or a lease they could careless about you and you get stuck in the lease.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

my aveo is an 06. my speedo is gonna be off anyways because i plan on puttin on my 17s in like 2 weeks so it really defeats the purpose for me. you should try to get more people to back u up. its hard tho because unless you have something to check your ecu with while driving, your not really gonna know. not everyone has this or a gps system. as these tools can be very expensive.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

I bought my Brand New less then 2 months old in to the dealer for the 5th time.

Here are the test of side by side driving with my vehicle

Service Car 20 40 60 80 100
Customer Car 24 48 68 88 106 All speed are in kph

See not accurate at all and no consistancy in the ammount it is out by.

If you own any of these models

2004 - 2007 Chevrolet Aveo
2004 - 2006 Chevrolet Epica (Canada Only)
2004 - 2007 Chevrolet Optra (Canada Only)
2005 - 2006 Pontiac Wave

I would bring it back to your GM delaer and get them to test them as I bet your vehicle speedometer will be off as well like the other people I have spoke to.

If the dealer says you are crazy tell them to read GM Bulletins 3779, 3779A & 3779B as they have know about this since 2004 and yet there still is no fix for this.

Re: Speedometer Accuracy

Yes I had a old lady pass me in a schools zone at 40KM and that is when I hooked up the GPS and found this out. GM still doesn't have a fix but continue to sell the above models listed and they have this issue.

Please make sure you let people know about this will help in a recall maybe
