ZC or B16?

This has probably been asked before, but I'm looking for users personal experience with these two engines and what they thought of them.

I prefer a B16, however it's not exactly in the budget at the moment. The next best thing would be the ZC/D16. Is there anybody out there satisfied with this engine. It would be going into a 91 hatch EF.

Any comments or stories would be greatly appreciated.

well If you dont have the budget for a b16, the zc is a nice alternative. Having stock mounting locations and such make it less involved of a swap and less costly as well. However if you plan to ever do a b16 swap, you may want to consider picking up a b18a/b and swapping that, so that down the road youll already have the mounts, axles and linkages done. It also would help to know the car you will be putting the engine in, some are more involved than others. Doing a search will likely yield a HUGE amount of info for you.

I'm pretty well aquainted with the swaps....what I'm not clear on is the actual performance gained by each swap. I understand the hp figures compared to a stock D15.

What I want to know is how a person felt about the engine after it went in the car. Does the ZC feel strong and reliable, and was it a HUGE difference from stock? Were there any issues with the engine?

The B16 I'm pretty clear on performance wise. Guess I'm just curious about the D16's actual performance when compared to, or unpgrading from, a D15. And whether the engine continues to satisfy or does the ZC swap just sort of the "wet the whistle" and make the desire for a B16 even stonger.

Keep in mind, I'll be swapping into a 91 Civic HB DX.

every goes b - series eventually. lol um from my personal experiences with both d and b. i would stick with the b series. and from what you say i would put a b18a/b in first then once you have the money i wouls swap in a b16 or a b18c.

Not everybody. When you've had a built d-series that was just as fast as a tired stock b-series it doesn't matter what the code is or how many cams. Point is a fast engine in a go-cart-like car is going to be satisfying. I've heard some horror stories about the dohc zc though but they too can be made just as mean as a stock b-series. If I was on a budget I would get the engine that could have more aftermarket performance parts added to it for the money... but that is just my .02.

ok i see your points. but i was just saying that in my experiences.

i have heard that the zc dohc is not the greatest also. but i hear good things about the sohc zc.

so then get a b20 and put b16's to rest cause that's the route I went and its same price as a b16 if not cheaper...

B20's are great motors, lots of torque, expect I don't recommend a B20/vtec setup. It would be better to go ls/vtec. The sleeves on b20's aren't the greatest.

sleeves arent a worry with b20/vtec!!!unless you tuned it shitty and I mean shitty...but you go FI then I would worry about sleeves...BamBam will clea that up with you but I cant seem to find him anywhere....must be in Iraq or something.

Yeah, im pretty sure bambam was the one who voted against a B20/vtec and said to take a 1.8 ls block and bore it out to 2.0, then slap a vtec head on it.

I looked up his thread and says nothing about the ls/vtec or b20/vtec (which block he prefers)... :-)

I know there's a website that some one had posted his project car, I do beleive it was a hatch but can't be for certain I do know it was an ef car tho, and he wen't with the zc instead of a b-series and posted all of his experience on that website, but in my opinion if you're a tuner guy (which means you'll want to add more parts&more parts for more power over a period of time) and can't afford the b16 go with something like D16z6 or a D16a6 with a y8 or z6 head (not sure about other v-tec heads), you'll get the same hp as the zc (130hp I think) out of these cobimnations theroetically speaking and you wont have as many problems as find you next hp fix as you will with the zc dohc motor, parts for that engine are hard to find if I'm not mistaking. Thats my suggestion but to each his own, sorry bout the long post
