does anyone know an inexpensive way to lift a 96 jimmy 4x4 maybe 2 or 3 inches.

a body lift will be the cheapest, about $130 for a 2 inch lift. a suspension lift will run about a $1,000 or so. then you would most likely upgrade to bigger wheels and tires so it all adds up.

I have a 96 Jimmy and they only offer a 2" body lift for that year. I had one put on for around $200.00. I am able to run 31 x 10.5 x 15 tires on the stock wheels by cranking the torsion bars to gain about 1" up front (basically levels it out) some minor fender trimming and also I had to add 1" wheel spacers so the tires don't rub the frame when fully turned. It's a really good look and you don't see many 4 doors with 31's.

i have a 98 jimmy and all i did was bought new shocks, added a leaf, and flipped my axle in the back, and raised the torsion bars in the front. that brought me up about 3 inches in the front and 4 in the back

Nice. How hard was it to do the axle flip?

not 2 bad...all there is 2 it is jack up the rear end so the tires are barely on the ground but can still spin by hand, take the u-bolts off, undo the leaf springs and shocks and driveshaft. pull out the axle and leaf springs. its pretty simple. you can buy a universal flip kit at a local parts dealer like auto zone or o riely's. put your leaf springs back in and use the u-bolts that come with the flip kit to fasten it. put in the new shocks and hook up the driveshaft and your good to go. i had a buddy raise the torsion bars and it seemed a little more complicated on that.
this will only work on an axle that sits on top of the leaf springs though, if you axle is underneath them already i would just buy some lift blocks, they come with u bolts and everything already.
