Today (2-23) in stock car racing-part 2.
Some drivers, the late great Fireball Roberts included, spent their career try for the "hat trick" of winning on the first four superspeedways without success. But with a car fielded by the legendary Junior Johnson and wrenched by the equally talented Herb Nab, leadfooted LeeRoy Yarbough pulled it off in a single season. Winning at Daytona (both events), Darlington(also both events), Charlotte and Atlanta in '69 he was the man to beat on the superspeedways. Here's my depiction of his droop nosed steed that he rode to glory in 1969.

Always love looking at not only the great builds, but the way you shoot the cars. Could almost be parked outside.

Re: Today (2-23) in stock car racing-part 2.
How did the 1:1 builders push the front ends down, anyhow?

Re: Today (2-23) in stock car racing-part 2.
Those Torinos and the Fairlanes before them were some of the first, if not the first, purpose built stock cars. Holman Moody built them using the floorpan and the rear subframe of the original and grafted a modified '65 Galaxie front "snout" to it. It allowed the screw jack spring adjusters to be used and lowered the front of the cars by eliminating the spring towers on the stock Fairlane chassis and relocated the front coil springs from above the stock A-frame to a postition between the two modified ones.
