Tire Casting Rubber

Has anyone used Micro-Mark's tire casting rubber? Or know of any other place to get some tire casting rubber? Theirs is the only brand i've been able to find. I'm wondering how "rubbery" it is when cured and if it casts just like resin?

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

hey bhop73

My take on Micro-Mark's Tire Casting Rubber is like this :

The setup and use is just like their resin kit. Easy to use with more than favorable results.

It's hard to describe the feel unless your a chemist. So, the best possible way I can describe it is this : Bowling Balls with finger inserts usually have a rating of 40 shore A to 60 shore A, which has a semi-flexible feel, but retains no distortive properties.

It's kind of a medium-hard rubber, but for tires, it does the job perfectly. I recommend it. The feel and texture is quite right, but I can't really think of anything else, off the top of my head, that it could be used for. If you have resin to spare, i'd just use that unless you have the money to burn for something 'just' for tires.

just my

Thanks for the tips. I don't really have "money to burn" but it'll be for some scratchbuilt 1/12 tires. I think i'd rather use real rubber at this scale, so I can just eat sandwiches for a few days to make up for it.. heh, heh..

Oh, we're talking 1/12. Go with the rubber and enjoy those sandwiches

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

Thread is a little old, but if anyone is following. I am looking for a urethane for casting slot car tires. ShoreA 30 is a maximum hardness 15-20 would be better. Does anyone know of a good urethane rubber that would be harder than the MicroMark TCR30, thanks

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

Have a look here : http://www.smooth-on.com/

I have made fantastic rubber tires with these products. If you are interested I could have a look at the workshop for the exact reference of the product I used, I will check tonight to post a picture of the result.

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

Have a look at this :

Guess where is the original...?
the left tire is the one made by Model Factory Hiro, the one at right is the copy made with urethane from Smooth-on.

I have used the reference PMC780 urethane rubber compound (which means shore 80). I must admit that 80 is a bit too hard. If you have to strech the tires to put it in place on the wheel you may need some muscles... I took 80 as the shop was out of stock in 70, I believe it also exist in 60.

I have made another trial with another urethane rubber for molding named REOFLEX shore 60 wich is more soft. I made a reproduction of the tires from Fisher's kit of the Ferrari 512 S & M as the tires are made of resin, see the link (the picture is in HR to show how detail it is)

http://membres.lycos.fr/philmodelcar/DSC02907.JPG

The mold used to pour urethane is a simple silicone one and I add to the urethane rubber mix (2 components) just one drop of black pigment for approximately 4 tires. The pigment was bought from the same manufacturer.

Hope it helps

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

Hello all I've used two types of Rubber to, the TCR-40 & Alumilite RTV Silicone base. The tires come out better in 1/18-1/12 scale in the RTV than the TCR. You can fiend them in the U.S. at Hobby Lobby and MicroMark. I've got to try some of those type of rubber.
Thanks White_r34

Re: Tire Casting Rubber

Phil, they're excellent. I tried a silicon gum from Prochima, the appeal is ok, a bit glossy, but it's very thick, not easy fill all the mold crevices. Your stuff seems muuuuuuuuuch better.

I found cool add some coloured powder (black) to the normal poliester resing to have (shore 10000000000000 LOL) tyres, result is excellent but obviously you can't strech.
