engine problem

Hey, i have a 1997 TJ with a 4.0 engine and 115k miles on it. I have one problem that i cant figure out for the life of me and that is it stalls, i'm already moving and i push the clutch in to put the transmission into neutral when i'm coming to a stop and the rpms go from 2k straight down to 500 and then it just stalls. I can restart it but that becomes a hassle when your at a line at a 4 way stop... i've changed my spark plug wires, spark plugs thinking those could have somthing to deal with it....no luck there though... i've also changed the idle censor on the throttle body and that fixed the problem on the test drive to make sure it worked but the next day it started doing the same problem again. I have found a way around my little problem but it doesnt work 100% and that is when i'm coming to a stop i just let off the gas and keep it in gear for about 4 seconds then i push the clutch in to put it into neutral, that keeps the rpms at my normal range of 800-1k.

Also i've noticed that my engine wont heat up past the notch before 210 mark on the guage(i'm going to take a wild guess of the 170 mark?)

Your temperature seems normal, my 4.0's have always run just cooler than the 210 mark.

The idle....check vacuum hoses, and with that many miles I might suspect the crankshaft position sensor also.

Cleaning the throttle body won't hurt either, if you've got a buildup of deposits in there it might cause the problem.

i've changed the CPS and on days that are above 75 degrees it runs fine.....its the days that are colder, and mornings where i'm experiencing this problem) i have 115k miles on it

Does it do it only when it's cold, or also after it warms up?

The problem only comes up when its cold. I live in Houston, Tx and this year was cold during the winter, i did change my thermostat from the stock one to make sure that the summers wouldnt kill my engine about 2 years ago. During this winter though my engine never warmed up. the temp guage rarely got above 11 oclock (10 being the coldest,12 being normal, 2 being overheated). Now the the temperatures are rising again the problem has gone away. I just want to know how to fix it for when the temperatures drop again next year.

I am not sure what your engine problem is nor how to correct it . But you might want to try posting the same issue (problem) under the Jeep Cherokee section too. I found that there are alot more people that read the give ideas in the cherokee section over the wrangler section.

I use to own a Cherokee and replaced it with a Wrangler

What the heck... won't hurt to try.
