Re: 1990 Caprive V8

well i spent about 400.00 at smog pro for a major tune up and oil change .. i chose them because they are walking distance to my house and i was the only driver home. I could have gottne it cheaper if i had gone deeper into Los ANgeles..Runs great after tune up no rough idols. but it still stalls... and after reading the other posts in the caprice frum i thin k it is the EGR valve which i b ought from autozone online for 50 bucks. now installing it is a different i have no idea were it goes.

Re: 1990 Caprive V8

It's located on the intake manifold near the TBI unit and on the passenger side.

It could be the EGR, but there could also be a vacuum leak (although since this is a speed density EFI system, a vacuum leak should cause it to simply run at a higher RPM), or more likely a dirty IAC motor.

Re: 1990 Caprive V8

I've had very similar problems for my 89 9C1. It would stall when warmed up, and when stopped, or going into reverse, or when the steer wheel was turned (at low very low speeds) Had a vacuum leak but fixed, and EGR was cleaned out (EGR solenoid might be a source of problem). Still caused the stalling. Full-tune up was done as well.

My mechanic then identified that it was the distributor and ignition coil (forgot which one it was specifically). Once they were replaced, I haved had the problem at all.

Did they do a fuel filter in all this?

Re: 1990 Caprive V8

Yes, it was changed with the full tune-up, plus fuel injector cleaned out, then fuel treatment (was still stalling). I also had the throttle body gasket replaced shortly after and it helped for awhile, noticing that oil pressure was also higher after, but was still stalling.

Re: 1990 Caprive V8

Oops, in my previous post, I meant to say once the distributor and ignition coil was replaced (old ones were shot), no stalling at all.
