Are some trailer brake controllers better than others?

I'm going to be installing a trailer brake controller in my 92 K2500 in the next month or so. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with different models or brands. Thanks.

Tekonsha seems to one of the best out there.

Re: Are some trailer brake controllers better than others?

I installed the Tekonsha Voyager in mine last weekend. My understanding of them is limited but from what I have been told, some like mine work off of a pendulum and applies a varied amount of current to the trailer brakes depending on how hard you are trying to stop. Others work from the brake light and the trailer brakes are either on or off.

I do know that most of the shops around here that install gooseneck hitches for the local ranchers and farmers install the same one I have. This subject comes up often on some of the RV forums if you want to do more research.

For the money and options the voyager is the best bet for a person that is not pulling trailer all of the time, it works great for a person that does pull a trailer all the time, but there are now better, more advanced ones out there. Depending on where you buy the voyager they range in price from $60 to $90.

My money went for the Prodigy controller. It uses an accellerometer (sp) technology. There is absolutely no transition between easy and hard braking like the pendulum types. Is it expensive? Around $120 and worth every penny when me or the wife is pulling the horses around the country.

Re: Are some trailer brake controllers better than others?

Since seeing the replies I was going to go with Tekonsha. Now I just have to decide which model, but I think I'll go with the Prodigy as I'll be hauling a car trailer. Thank you all for you replies.
