Can't fill my tank

I am having a heck of a time trying to fill my wife's fuel take on her blazer. No matter how we put the pump in it acts like it is pumping into a full tank. Took me about 10 minutes to pump $10 worth. PUMP PUMP click PUMP click PUMP click PUMP PUMP click. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem without taking it to the shop? Seems like there might be a valve or something partially blocking the fuel coming in. Could that be possible?

That is entirely possible. Depending on year make and model, there could be a roll over valve in the tank inlet. Basically a ball or flap that only allows fuel in. If you remove the filler neck from the tank, you can see it on some models, it's probably stuck. Another possibility would be a kinked rubber filler line.

Re: Can't fill my tank

I had this problem on a Buick I had, turns out someone tried putting sugar in my tank & it all got stuck in the filler tube. I found this out by sticking a rod down in the fill hole & it kept stopping. When I pulled out the rod it had sugar all over it.

Re: Can't fill my tank

I'm guessing it's the '97 Blazer in your profile.

If that's true, it's one of the two things old master mentioned.

The filler neck (metal tube) has a ball check valve. Let's gas in, but not back up the filler tube. I'd guess that the ball is stuck, because the rubber hose that connects the filler tube to the tank on a '97 is only 6 inches long by 3" diameter, and that hose is rather hard to collapse unless someone removed the tank and twisted the hose.

You could try stick a syphon hose down the filler tube until you hit the ball. You just might dislodge it.

Re: Can't fill my tank

The gas tank should also have a 1/2 inch air vent tube that attaches to the gas tank next to the where the filler tube attaches and runs up into the area underneath the gas cap. Check to make sure it's not plugged up. Someone may have hit the end of it with the gas pump nozzle and smashed it shut while putting gas in.

Re: Can't fill my tank

This is all great help. I have gotten rid of the 97' blazer about 2 years ago. My wife got an 04 blazer (I believe). I've update my profile with both cars that we now have. Thanks.
