91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

91 Civic HB DX, stock engine and front suspension assymbly. I have a bad vibration when braking, felt in the steering wheel and the brake pedal. Steering wheel feels like it wants to jump out of my hand. Brake action other than that is firm and strong.

Replaced the front rotor and pads, and the rear drum housing, shoes looked good. Also, couple of months ago the drvs. axle got swapped with a new one.

Problem still exists. Any ideas on what it could be?

Tire balance, ball joints, bent suspension bits.....brakes needing to be bled and flushed? Don't know what direction to go.

this almost sounds like your rotors are warped. is it like a chugging motion when your slowing.

Re: 91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

The rotors are brand new as of a week ago and the pads are brand new ceramic ones. Tires are about a month old and have been rotated every 3000 miles, they're Yokohama Aegis LS4's.

The brakes do chug at lower speeds or when coming to a stop, but the rotors are new. The real vibration kicks in above 55mph.

rotors, just because they are new doesn't mean they are w/in the lateral run-out spec. steering wheel vibration at highway speeds only when braking is the front rotors period. take them off. clean the hubs and the back of the wheels where they meet the hubs removing all the corrosion build up. make sure both screws on the rotors are tightened, and make sure all of your lug nuts are properly torqued in sequence. then try again, still vibrating then take them to a shop and have them turned on a good brake lathe and i bet you won't have any more vibration.

Its rotors. Period. It doesnt mean that the rotors are necessarily bad, take them off and make sure theres nothing behind them that could have caused them to seat crooked. But if that all checks out fine, have them turned.

Re: 91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

after 55 mph you get bead vibration??? sounds like the balancing weights might have came off or werent done right!but shaking when braking is by far something to do with your rotors....

Re: 91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

Looked at the rotors today. They looked good and appeared to be seated correctly. I also personally re-balanced the tires. They're now perfect, however, the vibration still exists.

Tomarrow I will turn the rotors and hopefully call it a day.

Just want to say thank you to those whom have taken time to write and help so far.

Just FYI, you can get autozone cheapie rotors which pretty much do the same job as any other rotor and replace them every time you do your pads. They cost only like 12 bucks a piece and come with some kind of warranty.

Just to follow up.....For all those who said rotors.....yoouuuuu'rrreee correct.

By the way they were autozone rotors. It was only one of them and only on one side of the rotor. So now the vibration it gone.

Time to go chase all those other gremlins a 15 year old car tends to produce....I can't wait.

Re: 91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

I never took the rotors back. There is a shop in my area where I can do my own work, so I had the rotors turned on my own. Now all is fine. Maybe I need to invest in a dial indicator so next time I can test the rotor before it goes on the car.

Re: 91 HB steering wheel vibration when braking, any answers

Glad to hear that everything is fine. Sometimes rotors just get rushed through production and finishing, and specs are a little off.
