Windows Vista and port 4080

I can't seem to get Vista to telnet to mud.astrakan.hig.se:4080

It's a game I play for fun, but the new computer I just bought with Vista won't work. It connects just fine, but I get no output from the connection, anyone offer any insight on what I can do to fix this? All firewalls turned off, I still get nothing!

4 things you could try off the top of my head:

make sure the built in firewall has that telnet "whitelisted "
run the telnet with admin privileges
if its a third party software run the telnet in xp compatibility mode
try another telnet client

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

None of those 4 work, I've tried a third-party software (ZMud), and Microsoft Telnet, created firewall rules, turned firewalls off.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Have you tried another OS on the same internet connection?

Have you tried connecting to another MUD server using telnet?

Any success?

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Tried it on WinXP with same Inet, works just fine. I've tried running in XP compatibility mode, created firewall exceptions, etc.etc., all to no avail, There's something within Vista that won't let it receive from that specific mud, all other muds work just fine so far...Going to see if I can have access to the login scripts that run from the mud to see if I can get Vista to receive or not, worth a shot anyway. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Are you having dramas with any other ports? What security software is running - including built in stuff like Windows Defender?

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

No problems with any other connections, including another connection on the exact port....I did however get a packet sniffer and caught that I am receiving the information that is supposed to be displayed...however that information is being filtered out by an unknown program/service or whatever, making it fail to display (I'm think so anyway). Still tinkering, but I narrowed it down to being something other than not receiving packets from that server.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Whatever came on this machine, I tried connecting in Safe Mode to no avail, as far as I know, I've explored it quite a bit there is: Windows Defender (disabled while I fix this dumb problem), Norton Internet Security (disabled for the time being), and the Windows Firewall(also disabled). Anything else I see running has nothing to do with it. Getting sick of screwing with this, probably going to format the new computer to windows XP Pro.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

I would be willing to bet Norton Internet Security is the culprit.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Highly doubtful, none of the Norton Security products were running when I started Vista in safe mode with networking. I even made sure that they were turned off via running services.msc and disabling all Symantec services.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

If you haven't already formatted, try doing a port scan of your Vista PC from another one on your network and see if the port is open. It could be being used by something else.

Re: Windows Vista and port 4080

Okay so I fixed the problem with Vista, it seems that there's a TCP autotuning feature enabled on Vista that has been disabled in previous versions of Windows. Long story short, I totally screwed over my networking a few times before I fixed it, but hey, it's all working again .

So how did you fix it? What was the problem?
