94 Metro odd reverse

I just put a new clutch in my 94 metro and all seems well except for sometimes when I back up it shudders as if the clutch is slipping terribly or the axle splines are stripped and spinning in the hub. Anyone else experienced this? Ideas? All seems well when going forward, changes gears beautifully (up and down).

Could also be your motor mounts. I know that there was a tsb out about the "shuddering" in reverse. My 91 auto does it every time.

Re: 94 Metro odd reverse

Only info I could find on AllData: I would assume that this would apply in Forward or Reverse where the CV axles are concerened?

Shudder or Vibration During Acceleration

1. Excessive CV joint angle.
2. Incorrect toe in or out. (Front wheel alignment)
3. Incorrect trim height.
4. Worn or damaged inboard or outboard CV joints.
5. Sticking tripot joint spider assembly. (CV Axles).

I Also just put a new clutch Assy in my 94 Metro 6 months ago. It doesn't shudder in reverse but the reverse gear "Whines" louder than most Manual transmissions I've owned......???

I agree, worn drivetrain mounts (Engine and Tranny) can cause too much drivetrain flex and effect driveline angles (CV Axles).....Does your car have this symptom when you lighlty accelerate in reverse?

Re: 94 Metro odd reverse

Just got an replacement transmission put into this car as the prior owner was an idiot.... He had swapped in a JDM engine but broke trans mounting bolts left some loose, left the sleeve out of the shifter positioning rod and the list goes on and on. Consequently I have only just taken the car out for a spin around the neighborhood. One thing I'm pretty sure of is the alignment isn't right so I'll get that squred away. I suspect the Cv joints are at least ok as they aren't squealing or popping at low speeds or sharp turns. Car also has 13 inch wheel/tires on the front and 12 inchers on the back. All 4 wheels are set up with the larger studs and I have recently acquired enough 13 inch wheels to make all match so I'll get that swapped.
