1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
Hello everyone just new to this.
I purchased my daughter a 1993 Geo 1lt/Auto. Since the purchase I have replaced the flywheel 3 times within a year. I later found out the engine was replaced prior to me obtaining it. Could I be missing a part between torque converter and flywheel. All help would be appreciated. |

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
is it a automatic with a flex plate or a stick with a flywheel? on the automatic there is a spacer between the crank and the flex plat and a large washer on the bolt side. whats happening to your old one?

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
Thank-You for your quick response. The center of the flexplate (automatic flywheel) is breaking out.there was a space between the flywheel and crank and the washer on the bolt side. I have a repair manual for it but only shows for manual application.

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
Take a look at this pic (Part #'s 1 , 2 , 3 and 4) .
Part #1.....Flange Part #2.....Flexplate Part #3.....Plate Part #4....Torque Convertor. Part #' 1 (Flange) and part # 3 (Plate) should be mounted on each side of the Auto trans Flexplate. If ones missing, you've found your problem! Take Crvett69 up on his offer and buy the whole setup! Your gonna be hard pressed to find the missing part by itself! BTW, In a Auto trans, They call it a "Flexplate"......In a Manual trans, It's called a "Flywheel".

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
I have pictures of old flexplate that I removed last time. Pics are worth a thousand words. I had put the flange, the flexplate and plate in properly and this has happened again.

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
looks to me either your putting flywheel on backwards or you have something bent on engine or torque convertor

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
Was thinking maybe something to do with the crank. Maybe prior to me getting the car the Flexplate was on backwards. Thats why it went the first time, I just put another one in the same way I took it out. As I said before I found out that they rebuilt the engine after I had purchased it. No diagram in my service manual for an automatic only a manual transmission.

Re: 1993 Geo Metro Flywheel problem
The center of those flexplates should not be shattering like that (3 of them) unless something is out of alignment or balance between the rear of the crank and the torque convertor. My experience from broken or cracked flexplates in the center of them has always been caused by broken or loose bolts that hold the flexplate to the crank. When a bolt(s) loosen up (Even a little)....It allows the flexplate to move a little instead of staying locked down and beats the mounting holes in the center of the flexplate against the bolts....Eventually causing a crack in the plate near a mounting hole and then it gets worse! If the setup is out of round or balance, the bolts will gradually loosen up if not installed properly. Are you torquing the flexplate bolts to spec and using "Loc-Tite" on the bolts before you put them in? Since you just installed the new flexplate, I suggest you get the car up on a set of ramps (E-Brake on and rear wheels chocked/Blocked), Remove the inspection cover for the Flexplate/Torque convertor, Then with a good light source, start the car and get under it and check/View the flexplate/torque convertor to see if it is out of balance or out of alignment in the whole setup? Also, it seems as if you should have been having problems with the Starter motor correctly meshing with the flexplate if the flexplate had been installed backwards when starting the car? After a 3rd flexplate broke....I would have seriously considered replacing ALL 3 parts (Flexplate, Flange and Plate) before installing the new flexplate as the odds are that 2 other parts have recieved some wear or Dmg during the other 3 flexplates breaking apart!
