proper gap size

What is the proper gap size for spark plugs for an 87 4.3L, i was told by pepboys 0.35. is this correct?

Should be on the emission sticker under hood. .035 sounds about right.

assured check under hood and indeed .35 is proper but for sum odd reason my car runs like crap when gapped at .35, car runs hella good when gapped at .45, is this bad?
