power steering pump...

sigh lol... 99 GASE v6 3.4L

So last night I heard some strange squeeeky noise, thought it might of been the belt.. its been makin the noise all day so I put some coolant thinking it might of been the water pump.. noise went away for a little bit but it got worse pretty quick this afternoon...

Basically, the power steering pump pulley is loose, I heard from my guy at the local kwik kar that its a press on pulley, and really if its loose there isnt much I can do other than a whole new pump .. he says he might have the tool, w/ the hex bit and he might be able to re-tighten it, not sure... at the moment im stuck home (thank god it happened right when I got home)

The pulley got so loose, it started to smell and my steering was horrible, IE, no pump to help and drag on the belt...

Car is currently un-drivable, I cant turn lol or the pump/pulley will freak out and rub against the metal piece right across from it.

I was JUST about to goto the dealership too tomorrow for my heatercore problem, just my luck

Re: power steering pump...

You sure the pulley is loose or is the whole shaft loose?

That was odd that it quietend down when you added coolant.

The pulley does need a puller tool to remove it, and a press thing to put it back on. Should not come loose is what I was getting at I guess ...

Re: power steering pump...

yea its the pulley, its moved out towards the coolant tank, and theres a big metal piece keeping it from flying off and the belt coming off....

and yea, it being more quiet after coolant got me, the water pump might of been causing a drag, WHICH might be why my engine idles funky... it 'feels' like there is something on drag but I really couldnt tell ya...

REALLY looking into maybe getting a 03 or less GTP, Ive been having all sorta problems lately lol, I think a GTP would prob be more fun to play around with =) VERY expensive though to build up, but in all due time lol... either way if I get a pos honda ricer civic, ill still do something to it ha

Re: power steering pump...

Well it doesnt take shit to tighten up the pulley.
You could also have damaged the belt

GTP's are nice and fun
Though you'll have as many problems with it as your GA in time.
You realy have to keep up on maintenance with the SC.
Paddle shifters are the greatest!

I feel if I'm going to spend that kind of a price on a FWD car,
I'd just as soon buy me a newr TA

Re: power steering pump...

mini update on this...

I had my guy at kwik kar stop by my house to take a look... I didnt really look at it myself .. blah

but basically the pulley I guess snapped off the pump .. w/e connects the pulley and pump together is broken .. and so the pulley is spinning freely on its bar going all wobbly and rubbing w/e

plan in motion, have local tow truck come pick up my car, take it to the shop... get discount on pump and sit all day while the guy fixes... cause I NEED the car before saturday is done.. I have work sunday

wish me luck, long day tomorrow

Re: power steering pump...

Closed case, end result...

$50 towing - Less than a mile
$168 at shop..

it sure beats going to the dealership AND having good connections...

The pump is still getting the air out of the lines, the stuff is all fluidy w/ foam bubbles inside the power steering, its making a whine noise but its going away slowely...

the pulley was pressed on, after the first pump's threads were stripped heh...
2nd pump worked like a charm

the pulley wasnt a straight aligned press on but over time I guess the pulley will straighten itself out.. its not wobbly real bad

driving like a grandma still, heatercore still needs to be fixed but eh its going to have to wait now... oh well.... cant get enough of that sweet smell ha
