new motor turns over, but won't start!!

I searched for quite a while for a thread concerning my particular problem, but I couldn't really find an accurate description so here's the deal. My dad's 97 cavalier threw a timing chain and junked the motor (2.2L). So he found a used motor from a junkyard for 300bux which is way less than the cost of the head work the old motor needed. We've got the new motor in the car, all the wiring is hooked up correctly, but the damn thing just turns over. Now. I suspect the motor we got is from a newer model year because a couple of the sensors had to be swapped from the old motor to make the wiring all connect properly. Could this be causing the problem? I believe one of the sensors i switched was the oil pressure sensor (center of the block, on the back, located just above the oil pan) and the other was the temp. sensor (center of the back of the block). I could be wrong, i'm more of a Honda guy so these cavies are kinda weird to me.
We loosened the fuel line on the incoming side and turned the key to check for fuel delivery, and sure enough it's getting fuel, so i'm leaning towards a spark problem. That is, unless the injectors are simply not working. I'm a little stumped, and my next move unless i'm told otherwise will be to change the coil packs over from the old motor, because i know for sure that they work. Any suggestions?

Hmm, how did throwing the chain hoop is engine? The 2200 OHV is a non-interference engine, meaning if the timing chain goes, you wont throw a valve through the block etc..

Anyways like usual, start simple, try the injectors as you said, maybe get an OBDII reader and see if everything is electronically sound. Compression test etc. Or like you said, bad plugs/wires/coils.

Good luck!

Re: new motor turns over, but won't start!!

Well I didn't think it was an interference motor either but apparently something went horribly wrong, we compression checked the motor after the timing chain went and got zilch on two cylinders, i.e. bent valves. Anyways someone told me that sometimes when a motor sits in a boneyard for a long time they get gummed up and take a while to start, and I was also told that having the air intake temp. sensor unplugged may keep the motor from starting as well. (when we tried to start it we still had the intake assembly out of the car) so these are some other things to look into. I really, really hope i don't have to change the coil packs, cause that would have been so much easier when the motor was on the OUTSIDE of the car.
