Exclamation New Daylights Savings Dates can affect computers

Didn't know how many out there in the US and Canada were aware of the new dates for Daylight Savings Time that will take effect next month and any possible implications to computers and other electronic devices that rely on time keeping. More info here ---> http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070214/...ght_saving_bug

We just finished upgrading all our servers and applications with patches for that.

I believe Microshaft also put a patch up for this.

They are, but not everyone will receive it because of different reasons, some quoted in the article I linked above:

"Microsoft planned to send its daylight-saving patch to Windows PCs with the "automatic update" feature Tuesday. Users with automatic updates turned off should download the patch from Microsoft. (New machines running Windows Vista are immune, since Vista was finalized after the 2005 law passed.)

However, computers running anything older than the most recent version of Windows XP, known as Service Pack 2, no longer get this level of tech support. Owners of those PCs should go into the control panel and unclick the setting that tells the machine to automatically change the clock for daylight-saving time. They have to make the change themselves when the moment arrives. (This is a sizable population; according to Gartner, Windows 2000 alone was still running 14 percent of PCs worldwide last year.)"

Just out of curiosity, I would presume that older O/S's such as '98 are left out? Or NT or Office? Just wondering.

They are no longer supported by Microsoft, and Windows 2000 will also go unsupported after a little while. You will just have to manually change the time and date to reflect daylight savings if you choose to run those OS.

Because they're not supported any more. Who in their right mind is still running Windows 98?

LOL, was just curious. Actually, my mom's running '98. But she's old, and "inherited" my old Gateway.

Believe it or not quite a few still do. I know a bunch and probably some of the reasons I think they still are is they have an older computer and cannot upgrade or do not wish to upgrade, are comfortable and familiar with the OS,or may not use the computer enough to justify in their minds the need to upgrade. My wife's employer, a major health insurance provider just recently upgraded all the computers at her work from Windows 2000 to XP. There are over 1000 people in her building alone and I thought all along they were running XP. She says it's so much easier with the XP.

Re: New Daylights Savings Dates can affect computers

Daylight savings is going to be an extra MONTH? FUCK that.

I hate Indiana, but I'll move to Indianapolis just to escape this daylight savings bullshit. I like the sun, I like daylight.

Actually I think it's more like 6 weeks. I think it runs from the second Sunday in March until the second Sunday in November. I'm looking forward to it as the sun will be setting around 6:45 in the evening giving us more light. And it will be lighter an hour later for Halloween so the kids out trick or treating will be somewhat safer. In my area the sun sets on Halloween at 5 pm way too early. Plus it won't feel so bad in the Fall when it starts getting dark so early, it will be pushed back a couple of weeks. If you like the sun and daylight, you should be for the new changes. Some people get confused by the term "daylight savings" thinking it means less daylight when it's just the opposite. The savings is supposed to come in the form of energy, hence it was included in the 2005 Energy Bill.
