97 SE Engine swap

Hi
The engine in my 97 pontiac Grand Am se (3100) Just crapped out on me! I have a buddy that has a engine from a 95 Monte (3100 also) that he has just taking up room in his garage. I was wondering if I could swap the 3100 from a 95 monte in to my 97! I just need this car to run and I have little to no money so I would really like to use this engine as long as it will get my car running!
So is this engine going to work in my car?
Do I have to swap out all the sensors?
Will I come accross any problems using this engine? I didn't think so nore did my buddy seeing it is a 3100 also!

Please help me I need my car to get to work and back and it is over 40 mile both ways!

Thanks
Matt

Re: 97 SE Engine swap

Welcome to AF Matt.

It will probly work but all of the sensors from the GA engine will be needed. The temp sensor, knock sensor, oil pressure etc etc.

What you might run into is the sensors from the GA wont fit in the hole of the Monte's sensor locations.
You should probly check those out before you waste a bunch of time putting it in to find out it doesnt work.

But inside the 3.1 hasnt changed much at all over those years, 95-97.

Re: 97 SE Engine swap

Thanks for the welcome and replies!

I have done alittle research and found that the engine series is 93-95. Only differance would be the rocker arms are different! The pre 96 have a pushrod guide plate that holds the push rods in place. But other then that it should be the same! I hope...... kinda hard to find info on the internet....if that is really possible! lol

I will make sure all sensors fit like they are supposed to before dropping it in.

Thanks again!
Matt

Re: 97 SE Engine swap

That is also the same with the 3.3L from 93-95.
I had a 93' GA that I put in a 3.3 out of an Olds ciera.
It ran great for many years

Well good Luck

Re: 97 SE Engine swap

Ok we swapped the eingine and all seemed well till we took it for a test drive! When I try to speed up the engine seems to do nothing! I can have it floored and it will not speed up! If i Put it in neutral it will rev but other then that id doesn;t speed up. It is kinda a on and off type of thing! The only thing I can think of it the cam sensor. When trying to get i out I broke the mounting "piece" but still put it in! Could it be in a wrong angle or something? I also don;t get a temp reading! and the rpm gauge doesn;t seem to register?

Please Any help would well help!

Thakns again
Matt!

Re: 97 SE Engine swap

Sounds like you hav forgot to hook some stuff up.
Like I said before, you might run into trouble like this.

If the cam sensor isnt in right it might not read correct and would cause performance issues.

Double check your conections, both wires and vacum lines.
And make sure the wire connectors are clean and making proper contact(s).

Good Luck
