This will prolly get moved, but i didnt know where else to put it...

Anyway, just wondering what kinda radar shit u guys use... i cant afford another ticket so i figure i'll go ahead and take some preventative action. I dont want some pos that works from 5 feet away, but i dont need the whole 500 kit, ya know? somwhere in between is good... advice?

Re: radar detector...?

Click on 'Search' button. Enter 'radar detector'. Read 10 billion results. Buy $400 radar detector. Get another ticket. Realize it's time to slow down.

Radar detectors are nice, but they wont save you everytime and you will get nailed the first time you rely on them instead of paying attention. I've been pulled over just as many times with one, as without. Granted I've been saved plenty of times, but still...plenty of times it didn't matter.

My advice, buy "beat your ticket: go to court and win" And slow down if you aren't willing to pay to play.

Re: radar detector...?

i have the escort passport 8500. it saved my ass many times but it's not fool proof, they'll still get you with instant-on and laser. and if you do get pulled over and the cop sees the detector, you're definitely getting the ticket. that being said, valentine and the passport are said to be the best, unless you go with some expensive full car system with sensors everywhere and shit.

That would probably be the lasers that cops use to detect the speed you're traveling at, without you knowing that they're there...

Re: radar detector...?

^^ Cops really do not use radar that much at all. Here are some reasons why:

1) It can not be shot through glass
2) It can not be shot from a moving vehicle
3) In order to get an accurate reading on a laser gun you need a tri-pod to keep it steady enough, otherwise it will give out a bad reading
4) They are extremely expensive as oppose to radar guns

As far as they go though BP2k2Max has one of the best ones you can get. I have heard great things about them but even those are not always going to keep you out of trouble.

Re: radar detector...?

far as i know, with laser its pretty much always instant, so if the cops trying and trying to target you, and he cant, he pretty much knows you have something and will pull you over anyways

question on lasers though, i've been pulled over by a cop who was in oncoming traffic so driving towards me and got my speed and did a u-turn and pulled me over,

now is that them just guessing that i was speeding? or can there guns or vehicle mounted ones actually tell your speed while there moving at a closing distance towards you too

I hope so, cuz I've been borrowing my roommate's Passport, and man, that thing has saved my ass a few times. Too bad the one day I didn't have it was the one day I wasn't paying attention. Ugh.

Some states they are ok, some they aren't, just gotta look it up. The thing with radar/laser detectors and what not is you have to be carefull to not get lulled into a false sense of security. If your not paying attention to the detector, or your going WAY over the limit when it finally does go off, your most likely screwed. Nothing really beats common sense and paying attention. You'll want to spend some good money on a detector, and I'd recomend either the Valentine or the Passport. You can't go wrong with either.

However, unless your doing a cross country rally and plan to spend copious amounts of time over the century mark, don't worry about jammers and scramblers and all that shit. Hell, on Mythbusters today, they did a test of the different photoblockers for speed cammeras...none of them worked.

They can tell your speed. I don't know what kind of gun it is, but I've been able to see the speed reading on a cop's gun when I was driving next to him before. There was nobody in front of us, so I'd assume it was the speed of oncoming traffic.
