grand vitara backing noise

i have a 2000 grand vitara .today, it started sounding like i was backing over something, when i did a sharp turn to back out of a head-in parking spot.upon inspection, there was nothing on the roadway. what is happening?IS THIS A SUSPENSION PROBLEM? STEERING?
