Exclamation Squeeking/grinding noise when comming to a stop (not brakes) 94voyager

Hey guys,
Ok I know its going to sound like a brake problem. When I come to a stop I hear a grinding/squeeking noise. I know for sure it is not the brakes, they've been checked. Someone said it might be the cv or cb joint, whatever lol. I thought if it was that that I'd hear it more than just when I come to a complete stop. Someone help me out.

Thanks

Hi,

Specifically what did you have checked on the brakes? I ask becuase you may have good pads and rotors but a bad caliper. It may be sticking or not working properly and causing a drag, that could possibly sound like a grinding noise. I recently had new pads and rotors installed(95 caravan) and now after some time I am hearing that grinding that I heard before and though was bad brakes. I am pretty sure it is the caliper becuase at times it will smack real hard when applying the brakes. It doesn't do this very often so I have not had anything else checked. I did look and the rotors are clean and all looks ok, so you might want to get the caliper(s) checked. Good luck

Larry

When you say the brakes were checked I'll assume the rotors showed no sign of damage ie, grooves ground into the surface and plenty of pad left. I'll also assume the noise is coming from the front. Left, right or both?

Bad constant velocity (cv) joints normally "click" in turns (outer) or "clunk" during acceleration and deceleration (inner). When the brakes were inspected did they check the wheel bearings? Could be a good possibility because as you brake, weight is shifted forward putting more stress on the bearings.

Suggest you find an empty parking lot and try this: try duplicating the noise without using the front brakes to come to a stop. Just let it coast, use the parking brake, or downshift the transmission. Noise still there? That's more proof it's not the brakes. That done, lower both front windows and make slow turns left and right. Hear a click with your grinding noise? Could be the outer cv joints. If you hear the click turning just one way, one outer cv joint is bad and it's the opposite side from the turn ie, clicking left, then the right outer cv joint is bad. You'll probably see cracked cv joint boots. Let us know what you find.

If the outer CV joint is going bad, it will make a grinding noise while driving, and you should be able to feel the vibration.
Also check the rear wheel bearings, when they get dry, they make a grinding noise during low mph, usually the noise is not audible when going over 35mph unless they are ruined.
Some other posts suggest checking the struts, making sure the springs are not twisting off their flange. The top part.
