98 Blazer blows oil filter seal
Looking for help as to why oil pressure builds enough to blow seal on filter. I'm guessing there's a relief valve somewhere???? Can it be replaced and where is it??? 130,000 miles on truck. 10 degrees out with 5w/30 in crankcase and superflow filter w/ 1500 mi on oil. Installed new filter and topped off, ran for 2 mins and blew new filter seal. It pegged the guage over 80 psi. Has remote filter, could it be a plugged line?? THX

Re: 98 Blazer blows oil filter seal
Sounds like a stuck pressure relief in the pump. which is inside the oil pan rear of engine.

Re: 98 Blazer blows oil filter seal
What is the ambient temperature? What is the startup idle RPM?
Max is correct abou the possibility of a sticking relief. You might try screwing on a new oil filter - Any kind - It doesn't really matter, just as long as it's blue (white in Canada) and reads "A-C" on it. Check the seal retainer groove on the replacement to make sure it is adequate. Follow the installation instructions and turn the filter 3/4-1 full turn AFTER the gasket contacts the base. It may require a filter wrench, but that's the correct way. I can honestly say that I've never had that problem down to -42º with 10W30. |

Re: 98 Blazer blows oil filter seal
Thanks, I've tried 2 new filters with the same result. Looks like a new oil pump is in order. It starts at 1200rpm's cold. Just all at once did this. Can i get the pan off without lifting the engine???
