exaust manifold/pipe

ok, what would be my easiest route...i mean cheapest easiest route.
I have a sunfire with a 2.4 the year 1996. GT.
I pulled out of a spot and the pipe broke off in the exaust manifold. on the opposite side of the flange. what I am wondering... does this happen alot. can i get around the 400-600 dollar repair bill by doing it myself(mind you i do not own a welder or know how to operate one). the way the pipe is im trying to find out if the flexpipe at the top by the flange is really needed. or can i use a smaller piece to go inside without damaging anything? The guy at the muffler shop said if I let it sit any longer it's going to rip out the wires on the O/2 Sensor. will this pose a problem is I infact do what im proposing to do?
