97 Escort Wagon Code

My 97 wagon has 154k and a flashing service engine soon light that keeps coming on.

On superbowl Sunday night, the problem was very apparent and could feel the missing for about 2-3 minutes while trying to get to highway speed. The engine was a little cold, operating for about 10 minutes on a -3 degree night. After 2 -3 minutes, the missing stopped and the car ran just fine and has for a few days although the light has stayed on.

The code reader says P0302 and P0301which is a mis-fire on cylinder 2 and 1 respectively. I have replaced the wires, plugs and ignition pack. Are injectors next?

Riley

Re: 97 Escort Wagon Code

What kind of reading should I expect or am I just looking for uniformity?

Re: 97 Escort Wagon Code

If there is a problem it should obviously be found on #1 or #2 or both. You are basically looking for a significant drop compared to the other cylinders. I am not sure off the top of my head wht the compression should read... but they should all be very close to each other.

I initially would have suggested the plugs, but you are beyond that.

Did you ever try to clear the code after replacing the parts?

Re: 97 Escort Wagon Code

Yeah I did clear the codes but the problem keeps popping back up. I usually can't really feel the miss and the light will go out after a day and and a half of normal operating but will come back on with a sudden deceleration or if I'm getting on the freeway and running it hard. subperbowl Sunday night was an exception as noted in the previous post.
