2006 Steering Wheel controls

Does anyone know if you can change the standard steering wheel with the one that has the Radio controls and the DIC buttons on it? I dont know if all the wiring and other setup is already there or not. I would think the radio part would be but I dont know if the steeering wheel would add the DIC. Presently I dont have the DIC, I just have the engine hours, trip meter and the mileage.

Any Ideas on if you have to do anything for the airbag also?

thanks for any input.

Don't think it is worth the hassle of repacking the airbag, fishing wires throught steering collum just so you can change the station on your radio from your steering wheel.. Should have gotton an LT

Packing the air bag would suck!! I thought maybe the wiring would already be there and just have to plug it in. I found the steering wheel on ebay for $60.

Not only does it suck, but you need to have it done by a ASE Certified technician and they will charge you lots of $$$$ to do it. We are talking safety here so my advice, not worth it.

Re: 2006 Steering Wheel controls

Disreguard the other answers.
YES you can do it. You need the steering wheel fronm 2003-2006 with the controls. You will need a clock spring part# 26101829. Once the steering wheel and clockspring are installed you will have to have the truck programed at the dealer for redundant steering wheel controls. They have to call tech line to get a special code to do this.
The airbag module comes off as a unite it does not come apart and does not need to be repacked. It is quite simple, take out the airbag fuse, disconect the battery, wait 15 min. The airbag has back up voltage this lets it bleed down.there are two small holes in the cover under the steering wheel stick a small drill bit in each hole to release the air bag module remove the two wire conections and set it on the bench.
It is not necessary for a tech to do this.

Go to www.autowoods.com there is a how to replace the steering wheel on this site.

Go to http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/inde...heel++controls there is a lot of discussion here with people that have done this.

Not only do you get the steering controls you get all the dic information that you don't have now.
Iv'e got the steering wheel and the clockspring. I just had surgery and as soon as I get to feeling better I am doing this to my 2005 GMC.

Thanks and have a great day,

Don

edit--- or do a google search on 26101829 and you will get some of this same information.
