Question 97 Tansmission help

I just bought a 97 Dodge Avenger ES about 2 weeks ago. I have been haveing a problem with the car not going into gear. I can go back into reverse but when I shift into drive the car dits and revs as if i'm sitting in neutral. About 10 seconds later the car will finnaly go into gear. I've asked a lot of ppl around here. they say it could be the cold. -20 to -30 for the past 2 weeks, or has anyone had this same problem? Think a trany flush could fix the prob? I'm new with all this so any help would be great.

The extreme cold is not helping matters but make sure the fluid level is correct. Or it could be a clogged filter, my sons car was having the same problem. I changed the filter last night and it seems to have fixed it.

Otherwise it could be internal problems.
