Cam Sensor Question for 2001 Taurus

I am the one that posted the thread about the strange noise chirping type noise coming from my engine. Yesterday, I took my car to a local mechanic to take a look and listen. He immediately noticed the noise coming from the housing from the cam sensor. He said that replacing the cam sensor is expensive around $300 because it is an expensive part.

I have a few questions that I'm hoping some of you can answer. First, What does the cam sensor do? What would happen if it stops working? Can I let it go awhile in order to save up money to get it fixed or is it something that needs fixing immediately? Lastly, is something that I might be able to replace on my own since it seems pretty accessible to get to?

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Cam Sensor Question for 2001 Taurus

The csm sensor is what tells the computer when to allow the injectors to open for a specific cylinder at a specific time. There will be no harm to the motor as long as the syncronizer does not break. That does not happen very often. You can replace the sensor easily enough on your own. The syncronizer is a little more challanging, but if you like to work on cars it is very doable. Let us know what you want to do and we will walk you through it. Good luck and have fun.

You do need a special tool to set the sychronizer and it is about $75.00 if you can find one.It will not run right if you do not set it without the special tool

Go to Google and search "30-s2600". You'll find out more than you likely need to know about it.
