Mike--You have to access it in the timing chain cover. To get off the timing case you still need to have the pan off. If you go to the trouble of taking off the timing chain cover I would also change the timing chain and the water pump. Not for the faint hearted. I decided to have the dealer do my timing chain.

Stretch58 - Just curious. Why did you have the timing chain replaced? Was it on your 96?

My 2000 3.3 with 119K at the time, developed an oil leak on the cover. It seemed kind of intermittent, but I am one who goes for zero leakage, so when I looked at all that was involved in fixing that leak correctly, and considering the mileage, decided to replace the chain while the cover was off to fix the leak.
Regards

Re: 99 DODGE CARAVAN oil pump location

Thanks. I have yet to find someone changing a chain because it broke, slipped, or made a noise on a 3.3 or 3.8. They seem to be bullet proof. In fact, not that I work on cars for a living but, the only timing chain problem I've ever dealt with was on a 72 Ford with 300K+ miles on it. The guy was rocking it out of a snow bank and the chain broke. Not a great day for him. Cheers.
