Help!1999 Ford Contour ABS replacement cost?

I was just told that the ABS rings are cracked and needed to be replaced. In order to replace the entire front axle must be replaced apparently. The cost quoted was $425 per axle...is this a reasonable quote? Should I try another mechanic?

is that $425 per axle plus labor or just the cost of parts?

$425 each includes labor (supposedly). I was told that ford does not sell the rings seperate any longer (I also called the local ford dealership and was actually quoted a higher cost). Is it nessessary to fix the abs?

$425 sounds about right for parts and labor. Honestly though, you can get GCK axle for like $130 a piece. Not sure if they include the rings or not, but you could ask them. You could replace them yourself and save a lot of money. The only tools you really need to replace the axle is 1.5" socket for the axle nut (at least thats what size i think it is), a couple other misc sockets for braking system, breaker bar, spring compressor, and a mallot. Its definetely not a one person job, but ive done it on my car a couple times now.

Its not neccessary to fix. My 96 didnt come with ABS from the factory. My dads ABS went out on his old F150 and he just left it at that.
