Automatic neon drive problem

My girlfriend has a dodge neon, its an older one so like 95ish lets say

automatic transmission

when she's driving on a normal road, comes to a stop... and goes to take off from the stop, u ahve to sit there and rev rev rev rev rev then finally it just jerks really hard n goes.

i dont have the car here with me so basically all i know is that its a green older neon thats pretty messed up. She also says when it does it normally a belt squeals... possibly a loose tensioner, but could that cause this problem?

it does it in reverse as well. i had it in my driveway and it popped it in reverse... u can rev it to like 3k and ten all the sudden its like ur dropping the clutch hard in a 5spd and it just shoots in reverse

Another thing to mention is driving on freeways is impossible... to get it to 60 u must floor it, then to keep it at 60 u have to floor it up to like 65, coast to 60, floor it again and continue on with the process, trying to hold it down and just keep the rpm's constant doesnt seem to work.

Also it does not do this all the time.

Any ideas? she hasnt had a mechanic look at it yet but im thinking about taking it to one to get an opinion

Re: Automatic neon drive problem

When was the last time the fluid and filter were changed? It mey be time, but if it was ever refilled with anything other Mopar ATF+3 or 4 or Redline ATF then the tranny is probably gone. That would make the tranny not shift correctly like you are describing.

The belt squealing is probably the power steering belt. Just needs to be tightened up a bit.

Re: Automatic neon drive problem

The torque converter isn't engaged at low speeds though. My guess is the bands are screwed and a new tranny is in order, but a fluid and filter change may help.
