Theft System Light on while driving

This light will come one while driving. What does this mean? I know what it means if it flashes while trying to start it, but when I am driving down the road, it will come on, now and then. Sometimes I will leave it run when I run inside a store or someting, cuz I don't want to trip it, if I am in a hurry somewhere, and it will be on, when I leave the store...

So, car running, and light comes on and stays on, no blinking.

Anyone?

Definitely has something to do with the Passlock system... Do you have a remote starter installed?

Re: Theft System Light on while driving

I read somewhere before, that it is a check-engine type warning for emissions. Can't remember where. If it is on while driving, its a wanring light. Different meaning then blinking and car won't start.

Thanks.

Straight from my '01 LS owner's manual:

"If the light comes on continuously while driving and stays on, there may be a problem with the Passlock system. Your vehicle will not be protected by Passlock, and you should see your dealer."

Bah. passlock.

The transponder in the ignition is failing. You'll have to get it fixed.

Your ignition lock cylinder is about to bite the dust and needs to be replaced. Exactly what happened to my '98 seven times in six years. TG I don't have that car anymore.

It's a hoot when the lock cylinder dies at a gas station after refueling or at a drive-thru.

Actually the decoder can go bad before the ignition tumbler

Re: Theft System Light on while driving

If it is the PassLock there are several threads here on how to bypass or disable the PassLock before complete failure. I disabled mine about 2 wks ago and it has worked wonders. No more waiting 20 mins for the light to go off so I can start the car.

Yep, an resistor inline on the decoder and ground reference wires is all you need. About 1/2 hour and $4.

Re: Theft System Light on while driving

I'll have to look for the diagram again on here to byupass that passlock thing. It is happening way to often now!

Anyone know the headline so I cal look for it easier?

Thanks!

Re: Theft System Light on while driving

I don't know where it is but I've written it 100's of times now. I tried to get it posted as a sticky but I guess since we're bypassing an alarm, they won't allow it or something.

OK, now you'll have to have some decent knowlege of car electronics and have some certain tools. The #1 tool is a digital voltmeter that can read ohms.

OK, take out your radio but DO NOT UNPLUG IT OR DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. If you do, you'll have to find the code to unlock the radio. If you already have an aftermarket radio, your job will be much easier.
Next, locate the main harness going to the ignition switch. You'll see about 8 thick wires. If you thumb around them you'll find 3 tiny wires. These are usually yellow, white, and orange/black or black. These are the pk2 wires.
Next, cut the yellow wire in half. Put one lead of the voltmeter on the one end of the yellow wire that GOES TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. It'll be hard to see which end goes where.
Next, put the other lead off of the meter to the black or orange black wire.
Next, click the key to "on" and put the car in gear.
Next, crank it over. When you do this, your meter should change and it should read the proper ohms. What ever this reads, you need to get resistor(s) that'll get as close as possible to that value. So if it reads 2.3ohms and you can only get to 2.24 or 2.33ohms go for the higher value. If you can't get close at all it's still OK but you'll have to do the PK2 relearn sequence.

Lastly, put the car back together and you should be good to go.
