2000 dodge dakota help 4X4 help
Yes hi,
I was looking at a 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 V6 4X4 that is for sale and have a question about the four wheel drive. When we took the truck on a test drive we went to a empty parking lot to test out the 4X4 option first we tried out low and found out that when turning just with the cars own momentum after driving straight (not on gas) that the truck would drastically slow down and come to a stop but when stratining the wheel it would start moving again just off idle. The same thing happens even while accelerating through a turn. I dont know much about 4X4 so is that what is suposed to happen or what could possibaly be wrong? it drives fine in a straight line. Secondly in High it would shift early it seemed and would shift very hard, it also did the same thing when turning? But in 2WD the truck ran fine. Any help please |

about the slowing down my truck does the same thing (1995 dodge dakota) i dont think its anything to worry about and you wont notice it if ur actually 4 wheeling

Any idea whats causing this to happen. is something worn out and about to fail. or is it just normal. because becides that it drives fine.

Mine does that too. I think it has to do with the locking differential. Normal though.

It is normal for it to slow down when your turning in four wheel drive when your not on a slippary surface. This is becuase four wheel drive is mainly for slippary surface. Oh yeah don't drive in four wheel drive alot when you don't need it expecially on dry surfaces like roads it's just not good for the four wheel drive.

Engaging the 4WD engages the transfer case front output shaft and locks the front and rear differentials so that all the wheels spin at the same rate. Because of this, you should only engage it while on slippery surfaces in order to allow for wheel slippage while turning. In a turn, the inside wheels will spin more slowly than the outer ones because of the difference in turn radius. But when 4WD is engaged, the wheels are not allowed to spin separately, causing binding and stressing the differental internals and CV shafts. It is this resistance to turning that causes the truck to slow down because the engine has to push against the bound-up drivetrain. Extended driving with the 4WD engaged while on dry pavement WILL cause severe damage.
