clutch help

I have a 96 jeep cherokee 4.0 2WD SE. It has 200k on it and I had a clutch kit done back around 100k. It runs strong but lately the clutch has been a pain. It is difficult to get into 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Often I will "lose pressure" on the clutch pedal and the car will begin to move while the clutch pedal is depressed. Also, I hear a grinding noise when engaging reverse gear. I've checked the hydraulic clutch fluid and it is topped off. I also checked the master and slave cylinders for leaks and they are not leaking. I took it to a transmission shop today. They believe it to be a hydraulic problem. He instructed me to replace the master an slave cylinders. I know that I should probably have a new clutch kit installed and replace both cylinders to be sure but I am broke as hell right now and want all the facts before I break out the credit card.

Any suggestions?

As I was reading your post I was thinking the problem seemed hydrolic in nature... Usually if you go to a tranny shop they would try to sell you the service if it needed it...

The thing is you have 100k on the clutch pack:

Have you noticed if the clutch was slipping at all?

How many different drivers use the vehicle (everyone drives differently some ride the clutch some don't)

how long do you want to keep the car and whats its over all condition and appearance.. Are you able to do the work yourself or do you have to pay big dollars to have it repaired?

I am the only driver and I try not to ride the clutch (too much). The vehicle is in great condition w/ new tires, battery, brakes, starter, alternator, etc. I plan on keeping it for many years to come. I am a novice mechanic and I own a repair manual. I also have access to a lift (on base military facility) and tools. I can purchase a clutch kit for $100 on ebay and do it myself if I have too. Do you think I should try the cylinders first and see what happens or do you think it's the pressure plate?

The gradual "trying to move when the clutch is pushed" would indicate to me that the pressure in the hydraulic clutch is bleeding off. Sounds like replacing the master and slave cylinders is the way to go.

While it's apart, you might as well replace the clutch as well, since your first one lasted 100K and you have that much on the new one.
