Mystery Engine Noise 1984 Cj-7
I HAVE AN ENGINE NOISE I CANNOT FIND! I'VE REPLACED ALL THE ROD BEARINGS & MAIN BEARINGS. I'VE REPLACED THE OIL PUMP.
I'VE PULLED ALL THE RUBBER BELTS THINKING IT MIGHT BE THE WATER PUMP BEARING AND IT STILL MADE THE NOISE AFTER I STARTED IT. THE NOISE USUALLY HAPPENS AT A HIGHER RPM AND IT SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE WHAT A DIESEL ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE. IT SOUNDS LIKE A BAD BEARING IN FRONT OF THE MOTOR. MY PERFORMANCE IS GREAT. THE NOISE SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE NEAR THE TIMING CHAIN AREA? WHAT DOES A BAD TIMING CHAIN SOUND LIKE THE ENGINE HAS 120 K MILES ON IT. CAN YOU OFFER SOME ADVICE? THANKS CORY |

Try using a better Gas (Like 94 Octane), also try getting a 180º thermostate, it possibly could be pinging due to low grade gas/exsessive heat.... also it could be your lifters, to much lash possibly? I think jeeps might be hydrolic so they may not be adjustable..... i dont own a jeep though... you have alot of miles possible that your timming chain may even be streched and possibley hitting something?
